- Maintain a healthy happy attitude and enjoy life. Do things you enjoy.
- Cut out destructive self-abusive habits such as smoking, excessive use of alcohol or illicit drugs. Very early in my medical training I observed that many of the patients in the hospital were there as a result of some form of self-abuse.
- Participate in enjoyable, non-destructive, low impact exercise. Some types of exercise place too much stress on the individual physically and defeat the whole purpose of the activity. (Eg: Lifting weights that are too heavy; Jogging on hard surfaces. etc)
- Eat a healthful diet. Many persons give advice concerning diet and I will join the crowd. Eat foods that you like but do not overeat. At least 50% of your food should be uncooked (nuts, grains, fruits, vegetables). Avoid processed foods as much as possible (sealed plastic bags etc.). Drink water. Cut down on your sugar intake.
- This is the first time in world history that obesity is more prevalent than starvation.
- Weight reduction surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed nowadays. Do not overeat. Fast occasionally as it allows the body to heal itself.
- Get a lot of sleep. Sleep is the time when your body regenerates itself. Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary which means that it should be very dark and encourage sleep in other ways.
- Get an annual Medical and Dental checkup. Catch bad stuff early. Maintain treatment of chronic conditions so they don’t ruin your life (Eg: High Blood Pressure; Diabetes; Asthma).
- Many household and industrial products are either untested or inadequately tested for their effects on humans. Household and industrial products can be very dangerous and it’s not always clear to the individual that these may be the source of illness. You should therefore cut down on the use of these untested products whenever you can and also use protective wear when using them. ( Eg: Gloves; Long sleeves; face masks; Boots etc.).
- If your skin becomes contaminated by chemical products then you should wash it off with water. If your clothes become contaminated, then you should change them and wash them.
- If you have a medical condition, then you should research that condition enough to become an expert on it. This will allow you to participate in your own care.
